Tobias Rehberger's Students
August 29 to October 31, 2010
Opening / Saturday, August 28, 5 to 8 pm + party
curated by Elke Gruhn and Sara Stehr
We’re focusing on the whole pie, not a slice. A
slice is good, but it’s not good enough to get you fat. We’re trying to get fat.

Experience a special season-start in the State Capital Wiesbaden in
2010—The ZusammenKunst 2010 takes place beneath the title Big
Class. Professors will introduce their Students in exhibitions all over
the town.
In this context the Nassauische Kunstverein invites Tobias Rehberger
from the Städelschule Frankfurt to present his class.
With the exhibition TOO FAT TOO FIT the NKV presents the new generation
of artists attending one of the best art academies world-wide.
Rehberger has been teaching at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main
since 2001. The Städelschule
enjoys a great international reputation due to its outstanding teachers and numerous, internationally successful graduates.
Seventeen young artists are offered an almost unrestricted platform.
TOO FAT TOO FIT is conceived as an exhibition devoid of any thematical
restraint. It will provide an insight into the individual artistic
positions representing different phases of education. Apart from
internal and external installations a variety of artistic media are on
show, such as wall design, video, photograph, painting and sculpture.
Beyond the individuality of each position the exhibition discusses the
common characteristics within the class and the influential role of the
professor.
TOO FAT TOO FIT questions the methods of art-academic practice as well.
This begins with the selection of the works and an interchange of ideas
amongst the students and continues in form of an artists talk with
Tobias Rehberger and his class at the NKV in October.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by a quotation of the
basketball player Shaquille O'Neill who grew up in Wiesbaden.
Nevertheless it is used programmatically in a double sense: on one hand
there is the aspect of a group exhibition, in which apart from all
individuality not only „a slice “ but „the whole pie
“ is shown, on the other hand it expresses the self-confident
position of the artists within an institutional framework. The
intention of the Rehberger students is nothing less than
“stocktaking of the art of 2010”.
A publication will be published.
