With [a noise in the ear like the wind], Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden presents a solo exhibition by artist Christian Naujoks (*1980), whose practice brings together visual art and experimental music. The exhibition was developed as part of the 2025/26 Follow Fluxus – Fluxus and the Consequences grant.

In his work, Christian Naujoks fundamentally challenges the notion of “normal” hearing by taking hearing impairments as a creative point of departure. The title [a noise in the ear like the wind] draws on the common description of tinnitus and other auditory sensations as a rushing or whooshing sound like wind. As a metaphor for a physical condition, it also points to the ways in which people and their environment are intertwined. Drawing on his own experience of hearing impairments, Naujoks takes an interdisciplinary approach to the political, physical, and relational dimensions of hearing. In this context, he treats audio captions—text-based representations of sound events—as an art form in their own right, challenging our assumptions about objective sensory perception.

At Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Naujoks engages with the work of key Fluxus artists such as Annea Lockwood and Mieko Shiomi. Through this artistic dialogue, he offers new perspectives on their work while reconsidering the relationship between sound, body, and space from a contemporary standpoint.

Bringing together film, sound installations, and participatory scores, Naujoks makes sound perceptible to the senses in a variety of ways. He also incorporates noise and the acoustic environment of the city to create a multilayered listening experience. In doing so, he not only opens up new approaches to art but also creates a space for shared listening and for experiencing different forms of perception.
