Follow Fluxus Fellow Maja Smrekar Comes to Wiesbaden

Lecture on 11 July 2024, 6 p.m.

On June 22, the Slovenian intermedia artist Maja Smrekar will begin her residency in Wiesbaden. She is the recipient of the "Follow Fluxus – After Fluxus" 2023 fellowship, which is being awarded for the sixteenth consecutive year by the city of Wiesbaden and the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden.

To mark the start of her fellowship, the NKV invites to the lecture “Abundance of Otherness”  by the artist on 11 July 2024, at 6 pm.  Maja Smrekar will give an insight into her artistic practice and will contextualise her works against the background of scientific, social and ecofeminist developments.

The internationally renowned artist will be on-site for several weeks to develop a new work for her solo exhibition, which will be on view from November 2024 to May 2025. As part of her fellowship, Maja Smrekar intends to continue her exploration of hybrid relationships with non-human actors. As part of her fellowship, Maja Smrekar intends to continue her exploration of hybrid relationships with non-human actors. She will continue the narrative of her 2018 installation and long-term performance "Opus et Domus"; which will also be part of the exhibition. In this project, the artist produces yarn from dog and human hair by performing an act of instrumentalisation of the female body as a means of production. In this way, she creates a social fabric - literally and figuratively - that refers to the archetypal relationship between humans and dogs. Their co-evolutionary development culminates in a spinning device that releases and evaporates a liquid containing serotonin, the tolerance hormone derived from the artist’s and her dogs’ blood.

Maja Smrekar was born in 1978 in Brežice, Slovenia. Since 2023 she has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana where she lives and works.
