The cabinet exhibiton 63 Days of Wands displays works on paper by this year’s WorkART fellow and illustrator Calvin Bauer (*1994 Geneva, Illinois).

The large-scale work Let It Be What It Is (2016) explores phenomena relating to the internal and external, mental and physical, connection and disconnection, and processes of self-discovery experienced while in unfamiliar surroundings. The Tarot plays an important role in Calvin Bauer’s illustration, specifically the card of the Magician. This figure is an explorer of mind, body, and spirit; past, present, and future; conscious, subconscious, and superconscious. For Calvin Bauer, the Magician „strives for creative manifestation and control over all elements, but is still at an early stage in their development, and therefore may find themselves lost, overwhelmed, and irresolute.“

Along with the larger work, the artist will be exhibiting smaller illustrations and sketchbook works.

Calvin Bauer is living and working in Germany for two months through the WorkART Kunstverein Fellowship Program, 2016. The program was established in 2011 by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine (ADKV) in cooperation with the Center for German and European Studies (DAAD) of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul). The selected American students intern for four to eight weeks at one of the many German Kunstvereins. Here they recieve insight into the unique institution of the Kunstverein, a non-profit and membership-based organization, and are afforded an opportunity to become immersed in the life and culture of Germany.
